Introduction

Faerie Dragons are crafty, sly dragons that flutter up high in dense treetops, well above the forest floors as they feast on the hard to reach plants. Because they are quick, hard to spot, and seldom stay in one place, any supposed predator would be hard pressed to make a Faerie Dragon their prey. If they are caught however, the Faerie Dragon can use its pointed sharp tail to sting the threat, or its disorienting breath to make an escape.

Habitat

High up in the canopy of Myln Arbor and the woods near Mapledale and Lionne.

Description

Their glimmering and translucent wings flap quickly as they fly along from treetop to treetop, pausing for brief respite among the branches as their incessant fluttering can tire them out.

They are a quite small creature, averaging around 2 ft long, including their tail, with a wingspan of around 1 ft and short stubby legs. Their white scales also appear to shimmer, though not as majestic as their lovely wings.

Their eyes are multicolored with near-invisible eyelids. Their eye’s turn to pulsating hues of red when they are scared, green when they are hungry, blue when they are tired, and pink when they are joyful.

The age and lifespan of Faerie Dragons is unknown however some have theorized that they hatch from eggs in a larvae-like state roosted in nests at the treeline. They feed on the tree’s bark until they are old and strong enough to make and enter their cocoon. The cocoon of a Faerie Dragon produces a very rare silk that is valued throughout Eden for being easy to dye and soft, as well as the light shimmer it seems to carry, even after being tightly woven. The cocoons produce it in very small quantities.

The process from Faerie Larva, to chrysalis, to Faerie Dragon is very quick, taking only a month or so. Once out of their cocoon, the Faerie Dragon grows for another month and by then it has reached maturity.

Behaviour

Faerie Dragons are quite elusive and crafty. They will try to trick and evade any predators before they confront them. Usually zipping through thick branches and taking rapid turns as they try to shake their pursuer. If caught, the dragon will use their breath to shrink, weaken, and disorient their attacker, then strike with their tail. Their goal is almost never to kill but to weaken so that they can escape.

It is known that Faerie Dragons like to eat sweet fruit, usually from the canopy of a nymph’s grotto. They often dance between these grottos tasting the different fruits before deciding which one they want for their meal this time. If they are not satisfied they will descend from the canopy in search of a different selection.

Faerie Dragons sometimes commune with their friends on the forest floor. They will make friends with Fey and other magical forest creatures. Occasionally bringing gifts of fruit down from the treetops to share, other times only bringing a mischievous attitude to play pranks with.

Abilities

Passive Dodge: Faerie Dragons are quite hard to hit as they love to flutter around their target above the ground with their quick wings. Instead of rolling defense to avoid a melee or ranged attack, the Faerie Dragon rolls 1d3 and gets hit on a roll of 1.

Draconic Resistance: Due to all dragons’ affinity for magic, when attacked with a spell, the Faerie Dragon rolls 1d3 and is immune to the effects of the spell on a roll of 3.

Faerie Dragon Shrinking Breath: When threatened or feeling mischievous, the dragon can use its breath attack that sprays in a 3m cone at a target, shrinking them to half size for one day / the duration of an event. When shrunk, the target has -4 on strength rolls but +4 to agility rolls. Furthermore, the melee range of the shrunk target is halved. This breath and shrinking also makes the target feel slightly disoriented for a little while.

After the day is up, the target grows back to full size over the course of a few hours. This is not a painful process but some have reported it to be “uncomfortable.”

Tail Sting: If the disorienting breath attack of the Faerie Dragon is not enough to escape its prey, it will fight with its sharp tail, by quickly lashing out, practically stabbing the target with it. This is an agility based attack that must be used in melee range. It deals 1d6 damage.

Drops

Faerie Dragon Dust: When killed Faerie Dragons disintegrate into a small amount of fine powder. Consuming all of this powder, allows the user to shrink just as if they had been sprayed by the breath of the dragon.
