The rarity rating for minerals and materials measures both their abundance in nature and the difficulty of acquiring or refining them. Common stones and metals form the foundation of daily life, while rarer ores, crystals, and alloys may only be found in isolated deposits or under extreme conditions. At the highest tiers, epic and legendary substances are often tied to ancient myths or infused with extraordinary properties, blurring the line between natural science and legend. This system provides miners, artisans, and scholars with a shared understanding of a material’s availability, worth, and significance within Eseron.

Common minerals and materials are found in abundance across Eseron, often forming the foundation of daily life. They include simple stones, clays, sands, and simple metals such as iron or copper. These resources are readily available, widely understood, and essential to construction, tools, and trade. Their value lies not in rarity, but in utility and sheer volume.

Uncommon materials are less widely distributed and often require effort to locate or extract. They may include certain ores, crystals, or rare grades of stone and metal that demand specialised knowledge to identify and process properly. While not excessively scarce, their practical applications in crafting, weaponry, or ornamentation elevate their worth above that of common resources.

Rare minerals and materials are difficult to obtain, often located deep underground, in treacherous environments, or requiring unique conditions to form. They include precious gemstones and exotic alloys. Their scarcity makes them highly valued by artisans, alchemists, and rulers alike, often serving as the basis of wealth and power.

Epic materials transcend ordinary usefulness, embodying extraordinary or mystical qualities. They may glow with inner light, resonate with energy, or be unbreakable by mundane means. Such materials are spoken of in the same breath as myths, for they often feature in the crafting of legendary artefacts, enchanted relics, or monumental works. Even the smallest fragment of an epic material is considered priceless.

Legendary minerals and materials exist at the boundary of myth and reality. They are said to be formed from the bones of gods, crystallised starlight, or the remnants of ancient cataclysms. Few can claim to have seen such matter, and fewer still to have worked it into form. These materials are as much symbols of destiny as they are resources, shaping the course of entire kingdoms when they are discovered.

The fields of geology and mineralogy are interesting to many scholars and researchers alike, as almost all solid materials are ultimately derived from minerals or organic matter, which are made of the same fundamental elements. Minerals are naturally occurring, inorganic, crystalline solids. Organic materials like wood, cotton, and oil are derived from living things and are not minerals by the strict geological definition, but the elements that make up organic matter are also found in minerals.

Similar to other fields, such as the field of Herbology, for example, those materials are categorised by their rarity and their general classification. As such, not every material is worth as much as the next, nor are their uses always the same.

Rarity

The rarity rating for minerals and materials measures both their abundance in nature and the difficulty of acquiring or refining them. Common stones and metals form the foundation of daily life, while rarer ores, crystals, and alloys may only be found in isolated deposits or under extreme conditions. At the highest tiers, epic and legendary substances are often tied to ancient myths or infused with extraordinary properties, blurring the line between natural science and legend. This system provides miners, artisans, and scholars with a shared understanding of a material’s availability, worth, and significance within Eseron.

Crystal

Crystals and gemstones are naturally occurring solids with a distinct geometric structure, often transparent or luminous in appearance. They can be mundane, such as quartz, or extraordinary, aligned with the natural elements. Crystals are prized for their beauty as well as their utility in enchantments, alchemy, and precision tools.

Ore=

Ores are raw minerals containing valuable metals or compounds within them. They must be mined and refined before their true worth can be revealed. From common iron ore to rare deposits of silver, mithril, or stranger alloys, ores form the backbone of metallurgy and are the starting point of countless crafts.

Metal

Metals are refined and processed materials extracted from ores or alloys. They range from simple, utilitarian metals like bronze or steel to rare, enchanted metals that can rival the strength of stone or carry magical properties. Metals are essential to weaponsmiths, builders, and artisans across all of Eseron.

Magical Substance

Magical substances are rare, often unstable or ethereal materials infused with otherworldly energy. They may appear as glowing powders, shifting liquids, or dense, radiant stones. Difficult to store and even harder to use safely, they are nonetheless sought after for the creation of enchanted artefacts, powerful spells, and rituals of great significance.

Other

The “Other” classification encompasses all materials that do not easily fit established categories. This may include fossilised remains, strange hybrid compounds, or substances from beyond Eseron itself. Often poorly understood, these materials invite both curiosity and caution, for they may hold secrets yet untapped or dangers best left untouched.
