Introduction

A camel is a mammal that has very long legs, a snout with big lips, and a back that is humped. There isn’t only one type of camel, there are two. The dromedary only has one hump, and the camel has two humps. A big part of these humps is stored fat, which they can use to collect food and water. Camels have many different ways to adapt to the environment they live in. For example, they have 3 eyelids, the third one meant to protect their eyes from sand. Camels also have long lashes to protect the eyes. They’re also able to shut their nostrils to prevent sand from getting inside their nose during a storm. Camels usually are way taller than humans. The average camel grows up to a shoulder height of 6 feet (1,80 m) and has a body length of about 10 feet ( 3 m). The average wait of an adult camel is between 1320 to 2200 lbs (170 to 270 kg). The average height of a dromedary is about 6.5 feet (2 m) and they weigh between 800 to 1325 lbs (400 to 600 kg)

Behaviour

Camels can carry a lot, namely about 375 to 600 lbs (170 to 270 kg) on their backs. For this reason, humans often use them for transportation or to transport heavy things. They’re also a great source of meat, milk, and products made out of leather or wool.

Diet

A camel isn’t a picky eater. The thick lips allow them to eat things that other animals wouldn’t be able to eat, for example, plants with thorns. Camels are herbivores, so they don’t really eat meat. They also drink a lot of water. A camel can drink about 113 liters of water in about 13 minutes. The body of the camel is one of the quickest in rehydrating mammal bodies. If there is only a little amount of food and water in the body, the hump of the camel releases water. Every 9.3 grams of fat releases 1.12 grams of water.

Habits

Camels prefer to live in groups. One of these groups is called a herd. The leader of a herd is a dominant male. Many other males form their own group also known as a Bachelor herd. A camel is a very social animal that likes to greet others by blowing in their face.

Offspring

A camel pregnancy takes about 12 to 14 months. After these months the pregnant camel will find a private spot to give birth. They usually only have 1 baby at a time, but on very rare occasions they can have twins. A baby camel is also called a calf. Calves can walk within 30 minutes, but they join the herd after 2 weeks. They’re fully mature when they are 7 years old. The total lifespan of a camel is 17 years.
