Many legends and myths alike speak of draconic beings, creatures made from flesh and bone, covered by an armour of impenetrable scales and much more. However, most of those legends and myths describe the lesser draconic species, such as Wyrms, Wyverns or Basilisks. Those beings are often, mistakenly, described as dragons by the common folk, yet this is mainly based on the little information known about actual dragons.

Physical Appearance

Excerpt from records found in Kronstadt’s ancient ruins:
“...and thus the terrible beast struck upon the bastion, melting away stone, armour and flesh. As of dusk, all of the city's folk had perished, their homes turned into a fiery hellscape. The drake's mighty wings, spanning two acres in length, still obscured the sun, its vile roar shook the hearts of men as Cedwig, Son of Cedwyn, stood before the beast, his sacred oath compelling him to end the fiend for good. But no might of man could ever match this fiend, leaving the hunter to succumb to his wounds after the beast had been beaten back into the mountains.”

Ancient records, which have been unearthed in buried ruins by the Reinarians, have given only little information on what a proper dragon may look like. Dragons have been described within those texts as being ginormous beings, towering over most man-made buildings, while their length from head to tail has not been described properly. Besides the simple mentions of the general scale of the dragons, they are known to possess at least four legs and a set of wings, yet scholars are unsure if this means that they always appear as such or if these characteristics only applied to the dragon the ancient text described.

While those few tidbits of information have already excited many scholars, they are still unsure if those creatures still exist, or ever have, as records of them are scarce. No living scholar has ever seen a being which is similar to the one described in those ancient texts, leaving the scientific discourse to rely on the accounts of peasants and explorers alone.

Mental Characteristics

Nearly nothing is really known about the mental characteristics and behaviours of dragons. However, scholars have held lengthy debates on this topic, and a majority of them assume that dragons might be highly intelligent beings. Such assumptions originate from the hypothesis of dragons being related to the wyvern and basilisk, both unusually shrewd creatures, which leads the scholars to assume that the dragon may be of the same intellect, if not more so, than those other draconids.

Lifespan and Development

Most information on the lifespan and development of dragons is based on assumptions about the lifespan and development of other draconid species. Draconids are usually born from an egg, which has been kept at a stable temperature by their mother or by the surrounding, natural environment; as such, scholars assume that dragons are born through similar, if not the same, ways. Through the same assumptions, it is believed that dragons age and grow at a fairly slow rate; however, the exact limitations of such are, due to missing specimens, research and information, unknown.

Territory and Grouping

No proper information has been discovered in regards to the territorial or grouping behaviour of dragons, yet scholars have made the simple assumption that the dragons might primarily live in mountainous regions, as the only records containing proper information about dragons mention them descending from the mountains upon civilised folk.

Abilities

The scientific discourse agrees that dragons are most likely capable of getting airborne. While such may be the case, they couldn’t determine if the wings were large enough or strong enough to enable proper flight or simple gliding instead, as neither the exact height, length, nor weight of the dragon was recorded or mentioned within the records. Besides such it has been assumed that dragons are capable of fighting with their claws, tails and teeth, similarly to other animals, including draconids. Some texts mention these animals to spew destructive force on their prey; thus, it is speculated that the dragon possesses an acidic gland similar to that of the basilisk to do so.
