Introduction

The Kingdom of Veronia was an independent Kingdom whose territories were the Ceril’s keep feud and the Imperial capital city of Adelsburg.

Despite the fact it succeeded to the Kingdom of Hadriana and it was mainly composed by the same people, the few changes from the former institutions were justified by two basic needs: A more united country as well as a strongly militarized bureaucracy, more fit in dealing in military matters.

The Kingdom was born after a coup that overthrew the Kingdom of Hadriana’s ruler: King Roderick Withmond.

The Kingdom of Veronia upholded and preserved the old Hadrian ideals, although they liked to think of themselves as even more accepting and open minded.

King Vivan De Augaussi and his purple and black banner seized power in Adelsburg at the age of 21, 1522 AFS. This is when this transition Kingdom was founded.

Culture

Like its predecessor The Kingdom Of Hadriana, the Kingdom Of Veronia kept the feudal system that made The Kingdom of Hadriana so successful throughout the centuries.

However, its new rulers chose to put their focus on the militarisation of the nation.

While keeping their notoriety as "Horse Lords" , the Augaussis showed no shame in accepting other races in their new Kingdom such as Tieflings, Dark Elfs , High-elfs and even Orcs that were welcomed into their capital city.

The commoners were used to work in the fields, mines and woods , and the nobles were mainly dealing in fighting and conquering. A particular attention was paid to horse breeding: the Veronian horses were renowned for their superiority on the battlefield, since Veronian army was mainly composed of horse riders.

The Kingdom of Veronia prided itself in having an understanding between the rich and the poor: while the rich take care of the poor, the poor return it with their hard work and commitment to the nation.

Festivals and Celebrations

  • Saint’s Day  : Every change of the seasons there is a fixed "Saint's Day", that requires every citizen of Veronia to attend local church sessions and pray to their sentinel of choice or The Maker.
  • Day of the squire : The day of the squire is a day where local commoners are called up to prove themselves in a series of tests. Local farm boys, workers, citizens or others are able to freely participate in this event. Those who succeed and pass are judged by knights that choose which of them can become their squire. Hence the name “Day of the Squire”.
  • Saint Nillias day : This celebration name originates from the priest Saint Nillias who performed multiple miracles and pilgrimages in order to become so famous. He gifted children who behaved presents and those who did wrong were given a piece of charcoal, symbolizing an unhealthy future and bad luck as a sign of disobedience. A priest from the local church visits the houses, judge the children and perform the same tasks as Saint Nillias. The children sing in little choirs during this day and even visit other homes to sing in front of their doors.
  • Yearly jousting tournament: Once every four years a jousting tournament is held. All knights and warriors around the world are challenged to participate in a tournament of honor and chivalry. A festival which holds tests of strength, courage and agility. Ending in a tournament of jousting. The winner of this tournament receives a prize.
  • Harvest Festival: A day to celebrate the start of the harvest. A big feast is held in Adelsburg and a harvest market is set up around the main road and square, inviting the outsiders as well to participate in the festival.
  • The birth of the king: The anniversary of the crowning of king Vivan De Augaussi. The festival is hosted in the capital Adelsburg, where the people remember when the day the change of the guard began.

Apparel

As it was common custom in the Hadrian Kingdom, the Veronian common folk were dressed in either white, black or brown while it was more common for the noble folk to wear green, blue, purple and red.

Society

The Kingdom of Veronia was an Absolute Monarchy, with limitations upon the King's power only during peace.

The King was used to keep a "Royal Council of Advisors" to help him with political issues within the Kingdom.

The following positions were part of the Royal Council:

The Chancellor Who was the first counselor of the King and helped him in administrative business.

First General The Army first rank, who led the army in the King’s absence and helped him with military business.

Minister of Coin The first economic advisor.

Minister of External Affairs The Veronian first ambassador

The Grand Judge Who administered justice and punishments in Veronian lands.

These positions were given by Vivan for shown merits in each of their fields. There were more advisors who were just helping and did not hold jurisdiction over any important sections.

Demographics

Veronia’s population was mostly composed of Attians, with very few non Attians humans since the Hinterlanders in Hadriana mainly migrated into “The United Provinces of the Hinterlands” in Wakkerdam. Any race was yet accepted in the Veronian Kingdom.

Religion

Veronian religion was formally Makerist, although religion had never been under great attention in the Veronian highest spheres, who mainly dealt in war instead of quibbling in theological disquisitions.

Military

The Veronian Army was one of the most professional militaries, and the whole focus of the Kingdom of Veronia. Veronian military doctrine was heavily battle tested.

The organization of this army is the result of the many lessons learned by Vivan during his service as Hadrian general, the conquest of Prezza L'Aquilla and the wars against the United Provinces of the Hinterlands.

The Veronian military affairs were almost completely managed by noble knights, who were the backbone of Veronian army. Knights were usually fighting on a horse, and wore their own houses' colors into battle.

Anyone knighted was also a “Legate”: a commander of a small company of soldiers.

The knights were separated into three legions:

The First Legion was composed by the "Inquisitors", led by a dark elf called Dain Zakarian. The Inquisitors were a unit made up of minority races within the Kingdom, specifically of Dark Elves and merely used only during wars.

The Second Legion was called "the Knights of Adelsburg". The Knights of Adelsburg were stationed in the capital city and were its guards. This legion was one of the most esteemed cavalry units in Eden.

The Third Legion was called “the First Company”.

All three Legions were professional units, with pay and full time work.

The rest of the Veronian Army consisted of feudal men at arms, hired and manned by the Lords of provinces and holds. As the three Legions were busy with exterior threats, the feudal men at arms were usually employed in protecting and serving their Lords lands, from fighting in battle to minor bandits.

The usual apparel of Veronian man at arms was made of a chainmail with black painted gauntlets, over which a white and purple surcoat was worn, together with a black cape.

Law

The Veronians were formerly focused on their military and just adopted the Kingdom of Hadriana’s laws and customs as theirs.

History

In mid 1522 the Kingdom of Hadriana had been in a war with the halfling kingdom of Prezza l’aquilla for a whole year. King Witmond generals did not like how the war was being fought and planned to overthrow him.

The Silver Promise, a treaty with the High Elves, is what made the generals decide to overthrow their own king. Lord Vivan hosted a meeting in Adelsburg where King Roderick was asked by force to lay down his claims to Hadriana in favor of Vivan. King Roderick accepted and gave up the crown, becoming the lord of his family's home Norburen and swearing loyalty to Vivan.

At the same time Arnoud Van Leuveren declared independence in the now conquered Preza L'Aquila, changing its name into Wakkerdam, and so did Czar Krzystof Tzyrnowski in Lunburg (formerly Kròlestwo Ràdymie). The war of the three kingdoms started, with Vivan and his Kingdom of Veronia, now reduced to the sole county of Revedin, fighting to keep the other provinces inside Hadriana. The former Inquisitors of Hadriana were hired by Vivan and supported the Veronian claims.

In the same year the former king was being accused among the Vivan circle of collaboration with the hinterlanders. Then King Vivan organized a second meeting in Adelsburg.

During this meeting there were the Chancellor Ashlyn Astaseul, the Inquisitor Commander Dain Zakarian, Lord Vivan De Augaussi and Kisho Frack. At some point during the meeting, the now King Vivan planned and killed Lord Roderick for his actions as king, valuing a great menace to his kingdom’s stability. A long war of attrition started, during which Queen Wendelin was captured.

The Hinterlanders had the chance to kill her but decided to keep her as a hostage in their capital. The Veronians decided for a risky operation to free their Queen and succeeded, sacking Wakkerdam. A Peace meeting was signed but Veronians broke the peace. During the preparation of its last war, king Vivan disappeared mysteriously.

The Kingdom collapsed and the young Joseph Witmond inherited the Kingdom, being the only living rightful heir. This was the end of Veronia independent kingdom in 1524. Its territories are now part of the Herzog (duchy) of Veronia.
