Introduction
Introduction
At the heart of every Hinterlander is the strong desire to be free. Having suffered under hundreds of years of foreign oppression, the Hinterlanders' first and foremost belief is the desire to decide one's fate. This strong independent favor has influenced the more liberal-minded Hinterlanders in pursuing private property and representation in their home rule. This attitude towards the peoples of Eden has gained the Hinterlanders the reputation of being stubborn, although not arrogant, for they have lived very soberly for the greater part of their history and are not easily swayed by lavishness. In short, at the core of their existence, the people of the Hinterlands are their survivability, adaptability, and stubborn independence, for they also rule themselves as a Republic.
Humanity can be traced down throughout all corners of Eseron, each grouping of them existing on a spectrum of subraces on which Hinterlanders are by far the most numerous, for Hinterlanders are not exactly one subrace like their Attian and Khadan kin, but rather a collection of smaller tribes and cultures mashed together under a big umbrella called Hinterlanders. One way to sort out the Hinterlanders is to divide them between northern and southern Hinterlanders.

Through the centuries, the Hinterlanders have always inhabited the center of Eden, spawning no great empires but great people. They have raised scholars, engineers, theologians, and philosophers. They pride themselves in their stubbornness and bluntness, so they have characterized themselves predominately as merchants, artists, and hagglers. The dominant religion of the Hinterlanders is Makerism, though they aren't connected to the Church of Hadriana.
Northern Hinterlanders live in the rugged spell-haunted regions in and around Magna Attia. They are the natives of the land and free peoples that resisted the Attian conquests. These people are hardened warriors from the kingdoms of the frozen plains where they despite all odds have carved out their own space among the many eldritch horrors, undead hordes, and hags who dominate the forests with their wicked spawns. Northern Hinterlanders unlike many other civilized realms have never cast out many of their tribal traditions and beliefs, of which an example is the primary religion among Northern Hinterlanders called “The Circle of Hags.” A tribe-to-tribe varying religion where the hags, witches, and truth sayers of the northern frozen woodlands are called to the towns, villages, and cities to gaze at the stars every full moon to interpret the will and prophecies of the Pantheon of the Savage Hunt, the Gods of the Circle of Hags religion. The people of the north gather in Tzardoms and pillager tribes along the coast who terrorize the southern Attians and Hinterlanders constantly.

The strong desire for home rule and freedom has put the Hinterlanders in the crosshairs of greater empires. Therefore in the days of old, the tribes of the Hinterlands could only have survived by banding together in great councils. To truly appreciate the Hitch culture and history, one must understand that the pursuit of freedom has left many scars on the people of the Hinterlands, who now all but concentrate in the Highland Freestate (Hooghlandsche Vrystaet) in the north. This is where they live in exile from their ancestral lands, but they live as free men.
To many outsiders, the northerners are seen as harsh and unapproachable folk who seem to be mostly isolated in their own world away from others. Though mostly true, the northern people have traditionally made great allies to the Denur Kingdoms of the far north who provide the northern realms with technology and tools to withstand the conditions they find themselves in.

__TOC__
Southern Hinterlanders are the polar opposite people to their northern counterparts who mostly reside around coastal regions around the west side of the Spine of Eden surrounding the Al’Hadar Deep in large free cities and other maritime merchant hubs that connect to one another in many trade leagues and organizations. They are a far more open-minded people than other humans who traverse the waters that separate the Empires of the north and the southern Sultanate through trade and a rich cultural exchange. They lack a strong sense of identity and national unity but make up for that through their extremely adaptable nature, making them easy to have around and even easier to integrate. It is not uncommon to find Southern Hinterlanders in many shapes and forms around the Al’Hadar deep. The most prominent group among these are the ones that live close to or inside the Hadrian Imperial lands and speak an accent similar to the Attian one called South-Hintish, just Hintish, or in some rare instances, East-Attian. These people trace their lineage back to the many republics and small nation-states the Southern Hinterlanders have created throughout history.

But you would find me sitting in a Southern Hintish tavern enjoying an exotic drink earlier."- An Attian Hunter living along the Northern border of The Hadrian Empire

Appearance
Character Creation
Hinterlanders are tall, standing half a foot taller than the average Attian Humans. The people of the Hinterlands have grown this tall because of the relatively healthy animal protein diet, which sustained them in the often war-torn Hinterlands, where farming offered more risk than cattle harvesting. Even in the new Highland Freestate of Raevendrecht, the main diet of Hinterlanders still consists of meat, sustaining their tall appearance. Hinterlanders often have darker hair and darker eye colors; blonde hair is seen as a rarity, though valued as a sign of beauty. In their attire, the Hinterlanders are more often seen in sober colors. Therefore, the garment is mostly black or dark blue robes with large white collars. They dress this way because Hinterlanders value modestness instead of lavishness. In the past, they were a people of bankers, traders, and merchants, their status preceding them and their black attire as honest and true business folk. A Hitch household owns various hats, as the Hinterlanders express themselves in sober colors. They do experiment with newer styles, including hats and barrettes. The most common is the broadhead, which is a broad, thick black hat with a flat cap and a belt around the headpiece. Women in the Hinterlands usually express themselves with their hairstyles and silver jewelry, as silver is seen as modest. The Hitch's modesty in clothing is subdued to hypocrisy, as the clothes the Hinterlanders wear look Sobre; they are most often made of expensive fabric. The Hinterlanders have recently added furs to their outfits, adapting to the colder climate. In addition, those individuals sympathetic to the Stadtholder family often wear an orange scarf.

Physical Traits

Hinterlanders are quite diverse-looking people due to the nature of their people as an umbrella name for many smaller tribes and peoples spread all over the continent. When taking an average in terms of height they end up somewhere between their Attian and Khadan bredren, standing at around 1.68m - 1.80m (5'5" - 5'9") for males with a small downward trend for females. Hintish skin tones vary enormously from place to place, almost all Northerners trend towards pale skin tones, and the Southerners are far more pigmented and in many cases come close to the Khadan when found south of the Al’Hadar Deep due to racial mingling between the two.

Languages
Across the board, Hinterlanders have a wide spectrum of eye colors ranging from shades of brown and grey to in some rare instances blue or green, though that is mostly seen in the north. Northern Hinterlanders often grow their beards and hair long to act as an additional barrier against the unforgiving climate which is quite the opposite to the south where most Hinterlanders enjoy a clean-shaven or short bearded look with kept hair over the rugged styles of the north and see it as a simple indicator of a civilized people when the face is well maintained.
The Hinterlands people speak in their traditional tongue, which is famous for its brutal pronunciation of the 'g' that often reminds people of demon sounds. The language known as Hitch does have some poetic phonations as it is often used in rhymes to explain fairy tales and morals. Other than Hitch, the people of the Hinterlands are also fluent in common, and some senior clergy members speak Ancient Attian when translating the Dictus.

(OOC: Hitch as a language closely resembles Dutch, some important words are explained below)
Apparel:

Southern Hinterlanders as a race hold no definitive style in the choice of apparel, usually simply adapting to the regional culture. Northerners on the other hand are way more defined, often tightly packed in many layers of warm clothes made of animal skins to keep themselves protected against the cold. Most men and women when out and about are seen wearing big bear fur hats.

Languages
The many people under the Hintish umbrella naturally come with a wide variety of languages. All of them speak the common tongue of course, yet there are many different little speech pattern differences that make each Hinterlander group stand out in its own right with many different blends of words and titles sprinkled throughout their sentences. The two most spoken languages among Hinterlanders are “Govorya” in the north and “South-Hintish” in the south.

Naming Schemes
Much like their Attian and Khadan kin, Hinterlanders from both the north and south put great importance on their given family names which have passed down from generation to generation through the years. Southern Hintish family names follow similar patterns to those of Attians due to the years-long process of integration they went through since the Attian conquests. This means that for example, Southern Hintish families usually have a surname that signifies the family’s trade around the time the name was taken on, or for example the family’s birthplace or region by the time the name was taken on. Examples of those would be Leerman, (leatherworker), de Boer (farmer), van Dam (from the dam), and so forth.

Northern Hintish people work rather differently in that regard, having taken on a thing or two of their Denur allies whom they mingled with for many years now. The only name a child is given at birth is their first name, given to them by the child’s parents. These are often names of grandparents or other noteworthy figures from the bloodline. Examples of northern first names are, Aleksandr, Aleksandra (F), Anton, Borodin, Igyor, Olaf, Oleg, Mishka (F), Svetlana (F), Nicolai, Novgo, Yuri, Vejena (F), Ivana (F). Northern family names are only given when a child or other lone nameless northerner enters a clan, after which they take on that name as their surname. A system directly taken from their Denur allies. Examples of Northern Clan names are, Taalov, Novgrodi, Volkov, Yozhin, Vasyl, Azarov, Dubov, Golovich, and so forth.

!The Hadrian Empire
|The Hadrian Empire, often referred to as simply ‘the Empire’, is the far-stretching country west of Eden’s Spine. A land inhabited mainly by the dutiful folk that are the Attian humans, one can see the many fields that cover the landscape being toiled by its hard-working citizens. Its cities are often bustling with life, places where trade, commerce, and politics take the main stage. The Hadrian way of life is deeply rooted in tradition and is often relatively simple, mainly because of this the Hadrians are known for their versatility and perseverance through hardship. The civil wars that have plagued the country in the past have left their scars, yet it seems Hadrians always find their way back, dedicating such feats to their deity; Alder. Within the Empire, the political and the martial often go hand in hand, with a large focus on retaining order and stability through military force. Within the Empire, it is not uncommon to see commoners rise through the ranks, oftentimes talented men and women are recognised and get the chance to prove themselves useful to their nation in places such as the army or civil offices. A land full of chance, and one of recognition, with its Kaiser at the helm.

__NOTOC__

Culture and Society
<u>Structure of Hoogh Society</u>
To describe the Hinterlanders, terms such as tolerant, organized, and cordial come to mind. Vise Versa the Hitch is also known to be quite blunt or direct. This has led many Hinterlanders to pursue a mercantile approach to the world of Eden. The world's riches are theirs to be taken, and pursuing them may portray them as greedy. They do not particularly fancy jousts and tournaments because their recent integration into the colder climate has adjusted the Hinterlanders, now known as Highlanders, to fighting monsters instead of knights in shining armor. In addition, their republican form of government has actively encouraged civil participation. Still, it also comes at a cost hence the phrase 'He’s screaming like a Hitch uncle' is referenced when someone goes on a drag about politics.
They are disciplined, conservative, and pay attention to the smallest details. They see themselves as thrifty, hardworking, practical, and well-organized. They place a high value on cleanliness and neatness. At the same time, the Hinterlanders are very private people. Yet the handshake of a Hinterlander to signify any deal or agreement is regarded most of all as honest. The Hinterlanders have always survived under the yoke of foreign powers, most pressingly the Attians, who occupied their lands for ages. During this time, the only privileges granted to the Hinterlanders were the occupations of merchants and craftsmen since these trades were looked down upon by the Attian Empire and later the Hadrian knights. Having taken to this mercantile life, a Hinterlander will not easily overspend himself on anything, preferring to live comfortably but soberly. This sober lifestyle has made many Hinterlanders in the past very rich, which is why many Hinterlanders were able to invest time in universities, arts, and other professions.
In addition, the recent disputes in the Empire of Hadriana have made the people of the Hinterlands rather hostile to Hadrians, who they view as having murdered their last liege lord. Because of the aid given to them by the Kingdom of Luminion, the Highland Freestate has amiable and friendly relations with the High Elves. The culture of the Hinterlanders is summarized as upright, mercantile, and independent.
<u>Political Beliefs</u>
Through the centuries, the old Hinterlands had been home to a different set of tribes. Other than their Attian kin in the north, the tribes of the Hinterlands stayed divided for a long time, and a lot of infighting ensued. In this early phase of the Hinterlands, the idea of a general assembly of townsfolk to issue their demands to their local chieftains was born. The chiefs of the early Hitch tribes were replaced when they, for instance, did not function properly. It is said that in these town meetings, the first general principle of the republic was formed. Later, during the 90 Years' war against the Kingdom of Hadriana, the chieftains briefly united under a common crown. During the Age of Kings, the people of the Hinterlands copied the lordly system of the Hadrians, and noble houses were formed like the Van Leuveren family.
In the aftermath of the collapse of the Hadrian Kingdom, the Hitch gathered in Wakkerdam (Now Prezza L'Aquila) and was inspired by the ancient town meetings of the ancient Hitch and the ancient Attian consular system they set upon creating a General Assembly dubbed the Estates General. After the collapse of the United Provinces, the idea of a state without a monarch was continued in the Freestate. However, it was improved a bit.
Every 2 years (66 days), a General Election is called in the Freestate. All adult republic citizens can put themselves up for election to the Estates General. This is the legislative body of the Freestate and consists of 4 to 16 seats depending on population growth. The citizens of the Freestate elect the candidates with to most votes to the Estates General. Within the Estates General, the chosen representatives vote for the Grand-Pensionary, who will represent the Estates General with legislative measures for two years. The Stadhouder, leader of the executive branch, also has a vote in the Estates General and is the head of the Orange Guard. The Estates General, for example, can vote on diplomatic issues, taxes, laws, and government structure.
<u>Expression and Art</u>
Hinterlanders express themselves soberly and modestly in their way of life. Therefore they do not express themselves with lavish gold, instead when captured. Therefore Hinterlanders are more drawn to the use of silver. Having been part of the merchant class in the past Hadrian Empire, the Hinterlanders have acquired more wealth than their average Hadrian counterpart due to Hitch being isolated to certain jobs. This wealth has translated into a higher average of Hinterlanders participating in colleges and universities worldwide. Hinterlanders would therefore view themselves as more tolerant of foreign cultures, having been educated abroad for the most part. The intellectual class of the Hinterlands expresses itself in two ways. As golden decorations are frowned upon, the Hinterlanders take great value in the arts, such as music and paintings. In the past, famous painters originated from the Hinterlands. Though the Hinterlanders do not value scenes of landscapes, they love portraits of their families or their trades. Hinterlanders take pride in their work and labor and, through paintings, have a venue to show off. However, the cold climate is less suited to flowery decorations, so the Hinterlanders experiment with adaptable flower types that offer them great value. As flowers are a direct creation of the Maker’s hand and not a fabric of man to show off their lavishness, these colorful flowers compliment the sober attire of Hinterlanders.
<u>Romance & Marriage</u>
Marriages are more liberated in the Highlands and former Hinterlands, except for the usual prejudice accompanying a Makerist settlement. As usual, a party is thrown, and the ceremony has to take place in the church, and the one that leads the church should give their blessing to the marriage. Often the head of the family has to permit for the bride to be married. This way, arranged marriages are still part of the United Provinces, usually for economic gain. But the bride can end the marriage on the altar at the clergyman’s final offer. When married, the bride and groom make a holy vow on a Dictus to support each other in times of hardship and well-being. All in all, marriages are a very sober event in the Hinterlands as they do not view love as an excuse to brag about one's wealth. Gifts exchanged at weddings are often practical.
<u>Life & Reproduction</u>
During their lifetime, a Hinterlander always pursues freedom and values their personal property. Hinterlanders ought not to spend their wealth on useless lavishness but are actively encouraged to invest in private companies. The life of a Hinterlander is, therefore, a bit hypocritical, as most of them are rich but don't show that they're rich. To augment this hypocrisy, Hinterlanders usually do wear and buy very expensive items; they usually just don't clad them in gold to show off, as this would make them look immodest in the public eye.
This wealth has allowed Hinterlanders to participate in many university programs across Eden and has evolved their past as serfs and peasants to a new civil class: the citizen. Like this, the citizens of the Highland Freestate are given privileges and participatory rights in government through the elective body of the Estates General. Usually, the patron of a household invites their children to come to the Estates General from a very young age. Upbringings in Hitch culture are very strict, and parents often teach their children moral lessons according to the rule of the Maker. The church is in charge of the upbringing of lowborn citizens, whereas richer citizens tend to send their children to schools and universities.
Although all citizens, there is still nobility in the culture of the Hinterlands; these are mainly the old bloodlines of the ancient tribal leaders of the Hinterlands and are viewed as the 'lords’ of the Hinterlands. Most prominently is the House van Leuveren, the current ruling house of the Highland Freestate and patron of the Hinterlands.

<u>Death & Funerals</u>
In Raevendrecht, the deceased is to be given a proper burial. Graveyards are not considered scary or blighted places but a place of refuge to try and connect with the recently deceased. Families pay and invest a lot in the decoration of tombstones. At a proper burial, a Makerist priest should be present. People that commit suicide are decapitated before entering the grave, as suicide is frowned upon by the Makerist church.

Introduction

Humanity can be traced down throughout all corners of Eseron, each grouping of them existing on a spectrum of subraces on which Hinterlanders are by far the most numerous, for Hinterlanders are not exactly one subrace like their Attian and Khadan kin, but rather a collection of smaller tribes and cultures mashed together under a big umbrella called Hinterlanders. One way to sort out the Hinterlanders is to divide them between northern and southern Hinterlanders.

"I don't know how they do it, genuinely. Why would anyone want to live their life in this barren wasteland up north? Eternally struggling and fighting off the many horrors that such a place throws at the common man. Ridiculous. I wouldn't do it, but you got to respect their spirit for trying. But you would find me sitting in a Southern Hintish tavern enjoying an exotic drink earlier."- An Attian Hunter living along the Northern border of The Hadrian Empire

Cultures

Nations and cultures in which Hinterlander Humans are present.

HadrianCulture.jpg The Hadrian Empire The Hadrian Empire, often referred to as simply ‘the Empire’, is the far-stretching country west of Eden’s Spine.

World View

General Hinterlander Human opinions on the other races of Eden.

AttianMale1.jpg On Attians… Slightly Negative

“We look alike, we drink alike, but we will never be the same. They made sure of that. When they come by all they wish to do is regulate every facet of our lives. Tell us how to live and act. What do they know of our people? Though in the end, they need us as much as we need them.”

 • Tijn Peters, A blacksmith of Bergwald.
KhadanAI.jpg On the Khadan… Positive

“The South folk! I have never seen so many bright colors! I once saw a huge gray beast prance about our village. The size of it was unimaginable! An elephant is what they called it. One of them gave me a toy in its image made of hardened sand.”

 • Eva Horn, a farmer’s daughter in Löwenmark.
HelfAI.jpg On High Elves… Negative

“Don’t even mention those knife-eared bastards around me! We thought they were our friends but alas, Elves being elves, they stabbed us in the back when it was convenient for them and we outlived our usefulness for their so-called righteous cause to save the world or something like that! They can say what they like but trust me when I say this, Never trust an elf!”

 • Gregory Valdir, a mercenary from the Northern Hinterlands.
WelfAI.jpg On Wood Elves… Neutral

“They wander the east mostly, however, don’t bring too much to the table. There are not many riches to be sought in their twigs and branches, nor do they ever offer anything to sell. A greedy people, even if they have anything of value, we’ll never find out.”

 • Oleg Azarov, a northern merchant who regularly visits the elven glade.
DelfAI.jpg On Dark Elves… Slightly Positive

“Dark Elves? Who? Oooooh- you mean the grey ones from the south? Yes yes, I have seen those. Scary religious folks but generally are trustworthy when they travel away from their homes seeking employment. But other than that I have yet to see any use for them. ”

 • Yuri Dazhev, Northern Hintish Raevendrecht veteran soldier.
DenurAI.jpg On Denur… Positive

“The Denur have been our greatest allies since the dawn of our people. When the Attians overreached, they stood strong beside us. A most honorable folk that will always hold my respect.”

 • Vladislav Yeltzin, Northern Huntmaster.
HalflingAI.jpg On Halflings… Positive

“I don’t see many of them up here. They seem to be nice and handy folks. I once had one coming by my farm selling me the finest Anjyarri golden trinkets. I wonder how those little bastards collect so many riches for their seeming irrelevance on the world stage.”

 • Dmitri Yankovich, Northern farmer.
OrcAI.jpg On Orcs… Very Negative

“Whenever I see an orc, I run the other way. They bring nothing but misery to my people. But there is one thing I would love to try… I heard that if you say their name to them out loud, they explode in green bubbles and flame! Doesn’t that sound hilarious?”

 • Tasha Stradov, Northern Warrior.
GoblinAI.jpg On Goblins… Very Negative

“A what..? Right, small orcs and such. Never seen em before. Sounds like  the stuff of a fairy tale, as if Orcs wouldn’t have eaten them the moment they spawned on Erseron.”

 • Katharin Jovanovic, Northern Bard.
TieflingAI.jpg On Tieflings… Neutral

“Ah the horned ones, fumed with some deviant fire they are. When I stood up to debate taxes with one of ‘em in our main hall I nearly thought he was hitting on me?! I guess that's why they never got their own domain, too distracted with magic and chasing each other with devious means”

 • Jan Janson, Southern Hintish pyromancer.
