Introduction

Diving into the realm of aquatic wonders, fishes fill docile life to all of Eden’s many oceans. They are found in a variety of patterns and sizes and are incredibly haste animals that can outswim just about anything undersea, and if not keeping a diligent eye, they can disappear in an instant.

Description

Fish are vastly diverse animals possessing an expansive array of colors upon their scale-like skin. They have laterally thin bodies with fins sticking out to help them balance and steer in the ocean and have gills on each side to breathe through. They also have a slimy and slippery texture that makes them nearly impossible to grab with human hands and an aroma similar to the salty scent of the sea. Fishes have a decent range of tastes, from mild and sweet to rich and strong. This, alongside their abundance, makes them a great food source for all nations near the shore. Although fish are capable of creating sound, most people do not know due to the serenity of it, emitting a calming and passive presence in their silence.

Behavior

Fish are often found in groups known as schools to better defend their territory and reduce friction to swim more efficiently. The diet of fish primarily consists of eggs, algae, seaweed, and sometimes other fish. They rely on suction feeding, or quickly opening their mouth to consume food to halt any water from passing through. Commonly, fish are found doing what makes them happy, which is exploring or hiding underneath vegetation or logs. They also have a vivid sense of danger and can easily tell when someone is nearby, usually when they see a moving shadow or water particle displacement. If fish feel threatened, they’ll have an immediate reaction of swimming away, and it’s nearly impossible to pursue them afterward.

Habitat

Fish are often found where sealife is most abundant. Coral reefs, salt marshes, and meadows are also common places. It is more likely than not that you will discover some species of fish when glancing down at any body of water, However, some species are bound to certain oceans in Eden.

In the Glass Sea, there are mackerels, brills, salmon, anchovies, and plaice. Shellfish, mainly squids, prawns, and black oysters, are also present.

In the Alban Ocean, there are bluefin tuna, cod, salmon, herrings, eels, bass, and mullets. Shellfish, mainly lobsters and crabs, are also present.

In the Coral Shores, there are tropical fish, like guppies and swordtails. Shellfish, mainly cloysters, are also present.

In the Sepherum Sea, there are yellowfin tuna, redfin tuna, cod, sardines, and swordfish. Shellfish, mainly clams, shrimps, and mussels, are also present. Also, there are two mythical species that dwell in this sea called Scorpionfish and Globefish.

Abilities

Being a tiny animal, fish can use their agility to elude a mundane attack and swim away.

-Squids are roughly ~30cm in length and are invertebrates, meaning they don’t have a backbone. Their body consists of a long slender frame that splits into ten tentacles and two eyes popping out from the sides, and upon their tentacles lay a multitude of many spiked suckers to allow the squid the ability to grab and pull themselves forward. A mouth can be found at the base of the mantle, which, unlike the rest of the body, is hardened.  This is the first stage of their digestive tract which uses a tongue-like organ called the radula to consume fish or vegetation. Also, their body rapidly transitions between colors by utilizing a specialized pigment for various behavioral reasons, alongside a smooth, squishy texture like jelly and an oceanic scent. However, when not fresh, will begin to reek of fish malodor, and larger squids are said to effuse a retched smell of ammonia. The taste is reminiscent of these features, containing a mild and faintly sweet tang. Most of its essence is akin to the ocean with the only exception being sound since they are aquatic creatures and therefore have no reason for it. Also, the squid has three hearts instead of one, all located at the base. One serves the whole body while the other two are designated for each one of its gills.

Their bioluminescent body can form multitudes of colors and lights, with certain patterns coding meaning to other squids. This allows them to signal where to find food, directions, or other squid if lost. Their complex transmissions indicate a higher intelligence or at least more than basic fish. Another knack of squids is their ability to blind enemies, which is usually utilized as a way to elude larger predators like sharks or whales. This is done by pulling from its ink gland and organ funnel to expel ink from its body, and its siphon thrusts it farther to disperse amongst the ocean and convert the clear blue sea to a caliginous pitch black. Once the sight of a predator is effectively disrupted, the squid can jet itself to a safe area and remain unharmed. It will rarely ever attempt to engage with larger creatures or fight them, knowing its lack of strength will result in being eaten. Squids will react similarly when coming face-to-face with any humanoid and will use any chance they get to evade being caught, making them a difficult food source for the races.
