Introduction

The toxic bat, also known as “masked devil”, is a bat slightly larger than the typical night bat that inhabits darker areas of Eden or the deepest dungeons.

Its large size made it almost impossible for him to hunt beasts that have keen senses: this is why this species developed a special toxin that they'd spray from their mouth.

Sight is something this species do not rely on too much, since its life in the dungeons has sharpened its hearing and smell in a way it can map its surroundings through the ultrasounds that bounce on the walls, be it a cave or a dense forest, and sense the presence of anything that enter its territory.

Habitat

Luckily there are not many of these predators on the surface, since it’s a successful species only in the lowest dungeons underground, where there are more and larger preys available, the darkness is permanent, and they do not have to compete with more successful, small and agile predators that can hunt both day and nighttime, like foxes and felines.

Description

This 70 cm long bat is used to inhabit the dungeons in small groups of 4-5 individuals. It's a bulky flying rat with sleek dark fur that usually hunts other rodents or small animals, and gets its name from a lighter stain on his fur that he usually has just above his nose.

This animal head normally has dark eyes and a fleshy growth on the large characteristic bat nose, which he'd use to both smell and redirect his inaudible screech.

Behaviour

The Toxic bat hunts by grappling other animals with his long curved claws he possesses in his toes, and then bites them with his sharp canines, sucking and leaving his targets without blood.

His behavior is overall just like many other predators. But what’s made this species famous among the biologists is that his eyes turn white when he sucks the blood from his prey, making people think it's some sort of demonic brood, or just evil progeny.

But that happens because his eyes roll back into his skull when he attacks, getting protected by a thicker lighter membrane that makes his weak small eyes unavailable for an attack.

You would not know if he's alone or there are others, if you get and see one, since this species is able to communicate through ultrasound, and it's smart enough to prepare ambushes and use pack tactics, making it a very dangerous predator when encountered in his favorite rocky biome.

Females usually are larger and more aggressive than males, since (as other mammals do) they try and protect their brood. The largest female is reported to be able to spray her acidic poison up to 15 meters, due to a specialized muscle that possesses. The poison is dark, acidic and also sticky as glue, and its effect works in contact with the skin.

In Combat

The Masked Devils will never be aggressive unless they have advantage on their prey or they are very hungry.

Their advantage is usually the ability to see better than its prey: be it because it’s too dark to see, or because it’s been poisoned with their blinding toxin.

After they’ve spit their toxin, they usually attack with their bite and try to run away if under ⅓ of their life.

Abilities

Bite: TheToxic bat grapples its prey with its claws and starts draining their blood. The Bat never fails its attacks against a single prey after a successful one. The bite deals 1d3 damage

Toxic Spit: The Toxic bat uses his round action to spray his acid in a cone of about 10m (might be more, depending on its size). This toxin has in fact the capacity to blind his prey on contact for a very long time (about 10 minutes) (blinded targets will miss 50% of their attacks).

Notes: The bat is not immune to his own toxicity, just very resilient to its effects, which is atypical for races that produce poison. People with high physical resistance could resist the blinding effect of the poison.

Blindsight: The bat can perceive anything that enters its 30m range, even if it’s perfectly hidden or if it’s magically invisible

Drops

Its toxic glands, claws and fur can be retrieved by a skilled hunter.
